Panasonic GH5 Sample Photos with Canon Lenses

How Good are the Photos from the Panasonic GH5 with Canon Lenses?

This follows on from a question asked by one of our YouTube viewers. I decided the easiest way to answer was in the form of yet another YouTube video. That way, more people may benefit from the answer and sample photos. See end of this post for the Canon EF50mm 1.4 and Panasonic GH5 Sample Photos.

The question was regarding the use of Canon lenses, using the Metabones Speedbooster, on the Panasonic GH5.

  • Would it make using the camera unbalanced when hand-holding?
  • Is it awkward or uncomfortable when using the 16-35mm, 50mm or 70-200 f4?
  • Is it worth selling the Canon 5D Mark IV in favour of this set up?

In a nutshell, the Canon EOS 5D Mark IV and Panasonic GH5 are very different cameras. The 5D Mark IV is more of a stills camera, but has firmware offering new and improved video features soon. The Panasonic GH5 is predominantly a video camera that happens to shoot very good stills.

Which would I choose?

If I had the choice...and I do, I would get both. So I did!

I use the 5D Mark IV for high end stills photography, commercial and stock. The GH5 is for high end, 4K, 10-bit video...again, for commercial clients and stock. I would possibly use the GH5 for stills at a wedding shoot using the Canon EF70-200mm f2.8 L IS and I would use the 5D Mark IV for high end video. Especially when these new, improved codecs etc arrive via a firmware update (or via Magic Lantern...whichever comes first).

If I were an amateur photographer/video enthusiast, I would more than likely opt for the GH5. I would then spend the remaining money on a lens/audio interface/speedlight etc.

As a professional, and hoping that Canon rumours are correct and they vastly improve the video features of the 5D Mark IV with a firmware update, I would opt for the 5D. Especially for stills photography.
