Find the Shutter Count for Your Canon DSLR

How to Easily find the number of photos taken with a Canon EOS DSLR

Firstly, why would you want to know the shutter count, or how many images a DSLR has taken?

  • First, to check that a new Canon EOS camera you have bought IS actually new
  • Second, to check that a second hand EOS DSLR you have bought is genuine
  • Third, to help sell your own Canon EOS DSLR camera with proven shutter count

There are actually a few ways to do this but some are long-winded and possibly quite technical for some people.

For the sake of spending $1.79 (about £1.40), you can save a lot of time and trouble and use eoscount.com.

All you need to do is visit the website, install their ActiveX control plug-in, pay your £1.79 and then connect your Canon EOS DSLR (via USB cable) to your PC or MAC.

Then, your camera details including serial number, date, time, firmware version and battery level appear. All along with the current shutter count plus you can also sync your PC/MAC/DSLR's clocks:

Caveat: Obviously it is easy to fake a document like this so my advice would be to (if you can), get hold of the camera if you are unsure and do this test prior to buying.

If you have the protection of eBay, Amazon, PayPal etc, then you can do this test once you have bought the camera for peace of mind knowing you can return it if the results are way off.
