After much speculation amongst the rumour mills, Canon has released details of the new Canon EOS 50D prior to Photokina 2008. It is an upgrade to the much loved EOS 40D and on first looks, it appears almost identical but the additional spec includes:

Canon EOS 50D Specs

  • 15mp CMOS sensor
  • Faster Digic 4 processor
  • 3″ VGA LCD monitor with Live View
  • Live view finally includes not one but three AF modes
  • ISO expandable to a Nikon matching 12800
  • HDMI connection
  • Plus EOS Integrated Cleaning System and Magnesium alloy body, with environmental protection

Here is the press release: Canon 50D

Canon EOS Heritage

The Canon EOS 50D comes from a growing line of pretty decent DSLR's from Canon. I owned the 10D which was pretty good but the 20D was so much better.

Then came the 30D which was ok but the EOS 40D was so much better. Will the 50D be another "meh" camera as we wait for the EOS 60D?

It seems Canon are sometimes possibly too quick to release a new DSLR. Perhaps waiting an extra year to 18 months would allow them to wow us every time!
