Event Photography Devon Sent!
Had a great week last week as I took two trips to our neighbouring county of Devon. One as part of a golf tournament (I shoot the event photography for the group) followed by some beach moto x.
Then yesterday to shoot my son's team in their first "county battle" against Collumpton Rangers in Devon. A great time was had at both as I won the golf tournament (along with a rather distasteful trophy). Plus Dorset beat Devon overall in the first of these annual county football clashes.
Even though the Canon EOS 5D Mark II isn't a sports camera, set up correctly it can do just as good a job. I used an ISO of around 320, shutter speed of 800-1000th/sec and an ISO of F5.0.
I also used to own the Canon EOS 1D Mark III which fired off shots at a rate of 10 frames per second. Although I generally found that I ended up with hundreds of shots I would never need. Also, the "OCD" part in me always meant I had to check and even process most images to make sure I absolutely had the right one.
I used the slower rate of 3 FPS on the 5D Mark II. Therefore, when combined with simply watching intently and doing my best to freeze the action as it happens rather than firing an "Uzi" of shots, I still managed to capture some great action photos.
Subsequently, the processing time has been severely reduced.
Canon EOS 5D Mark II
To me, the 5D Mark II is a great all round camera, even for event photography. However, it has some areas that I hope are addressed in the upgrade which is coming this year at some point.
Things such as more focus points, maybe a burst rate of 5fps or faster and 1080p recording at 60 frames per second which is great for slow motion, HD video playback. Other than that (and a couple of other little things) the camera remains one of my favourite all time cameras to date!
Lastly, if you live in the UK, you may be thinking of taking a sporty-leisure break in the South West. If so, have a look at the Manor House and Ashbury Hotels in Devon. They have facilities to suit everyone in your family including:
My 4 day event photography trip including 6 rounds of golf, 3 nights' accommodation, huge buffet breakfast, huge buffet lunch, evening meals and most facilities free cost around £250 all in…brilliant!
