Supports different file systems (FAT12, FAT16, VFAT, FAT32, NTFS/NTFS5) and many medium types (HDD, Floppy drives, USB Flash, memory cards, digital cameras and players).

I expect like most of us, at some point you have inadvertently or mistakenly deleted files from a hard disk or disk drive in the past. For photographers this can be a fairly common issue with memory cards being formatted by mistake or data lost during transfer.

I personally have lost images from a wedding in the past so I know firsthand how heart stopping it can be. The best advice I can give is to get hold of at least one program designed to recover lost data from any format possible.

EaseUs Data Recovery Software Professional does just that

Whereas cheap versions of data recovery software will only recover recently deleted files (they generally cannot recover from formatted disks), EaseUs will restore shift deleted files, data on formatted partitions or even recoup entire partitions.

I am a complete novice when it comes to data recovery but this interface is extremely simple to use with a wizard style interface. When you first start the software you have 3 choices:

  1. 1
Deleted File Recovery - Simple "Emptied Recycle Bin" recovery
  2. 2
Complete Recovery - For formatted hard disks or system crashes
  3. 3
Partition Recovery - For deleted partitions or those affected by virus attacks

If the simple deleted file recovery fails to work, step it up a notch by using the complete recovery function. Either option will bring up a list of hard drives attached to your computer for you to check.

Once you choose the hard drive and initiate the recovery…

Simply select the data you wish to recover and click next. Then select where you wish the recovered files to be saved to and click next…

This can take some time depending on the amount of data but generally, I found the whole process pretty quick.

Once the process is complete, you simply go to the files and save them somewhere safe!

One factor I found better than other software I have used in the past is that the recovered files keep their original file names (other software can create their own). I was overall pretty impressed with the simplicity and power of the software. It still amazes me how a formatted and supposedly empty 32gb Compact Flash card can still have 16gb of hidden data on it!

As well as some other minor drawbacks, the pricing at $89.95 may seem a little steep but then what price do you put on lost, otherwise irrecoverable data? For more information and/or to buy your own copy of EaseUs Data Recovery Software, visit the EaseUs website.
