Sample Tips on Landscape Photography from Our Private Members Section

Using Camera Auto Modes

Landscape photography is one of the most relaxing and rewarding topics of photography there is. Firstly, you have a reason to get up early to watch the sunrise or to head off to those stunning vistas you have been meaning to visit.

With a bit of forethought:

  • Watching weather reports
  • Checking high tide times
  • Finding out sunrise/sunset times
  • Reccying the spot for the best shooting positions (saves time when you only have that “golden hour” for example
  • Setting up your gear ready for landscapes (filters, tripod, camera settings etc)
  • Aiming for the Stag “rutting” season or similar experience from natures’ calendar in your area
  • Researching other natural goings on

…you should be able to get a cracking portfolio of landscape images together in no time.

Don’t forget though, that landscape photography isn’t always about wide angle, getting-lots-in-the-picture type images. When you really look around and focus your attention on the finer details, you will see that there is a whole multitude of images everywhere you look.

Open your eyes

Use a macro lens or a telephoto lens…think outside the box!

Get up high, get down low, look for different angles that no-on has thought about. Add some interesting and relevant foreground interest to add impact to your shots.

If you are going out early morning to remote and/or possibly dangerous locations, remember to take a few essentials along with your camera kit:

  • Food and drink
  • Multi-tool/Penknife
  • Mobile phone
  • Spare camera batteries
  • Map (if needed)
  • Good walking/hiking shoes or boots
  • Jacket and so on…be prepared.

For most landscape shooting, the above isn’t altogether necessary but it is better to be safe than sorry. Put your thinking cap on, grab your gear and get out into that big wide world and document it in your own wonderful way!
