A portable power station for drone pilots is essential when working on location. A professional, robust, reliable and solar-powered supply of energy will mean an uninterrupted shoot every time. Light and compact enough to take anywhere but powerful enough to give you almost unlimited energy. The PowerOak AC50s is my new favourite thing for my business!

As a drone pilot on location much of the time, the PowerOak AC50s is a life-saver. Having this much solar-powered portable power on tap means I can fly longer without worrying about running out of power! This is perfect for any photographer or filmmaker who spends their time on the road or at remote locations around the world.
Quick Caveat: I did not receive this product free for review. It was paid for with my own money and bought to make my life flying drones a hell of a lot easier.

Main Specs
The PowerOak AC50s is feature rich for such a compact portable power station. It will charge or power just about every bit of media equipment that I have including the Aputure 120d Video Light. These are the main features of this power house.

The AC50s is incredibly easy to use. When you first get the portable power unit, charge it fully before using. Most external battery packs arrive either part charged or completely empty.
All you need to bear in mind is you need to activate either the AC, DC or both outputs depending on what you are charging. It is worth noting that the two AC outputs charged my drone batteries a lot faster. Maybe around 50% faster so use those when you can.
Also note that when a battery is nearing it charge cycle, i.e. it is full, the wattage indicator will drop to zero for the final "push". This is to prevent damage to the batteries over-charging when nearly full.
Solar Charging The AC50s Portable Power Station
I opted to get the appropriate 120w solar panel with the AC50s for additional options for charging. At home I can use the wall socket. On the road I can use the 12v car charger and on location, solar power is my only option in many situations.
Whether you are in the mountains, on a boat, by the lakes or in a hot air balloon, having this much power at your fingertips is fantastic. However, you must be sure to buy a compatible solar panel. Please though, bear in mind that the AC50s already comes equipped with the MC4 Connector to DC 7909 male cable.

The PowerOak AC50s may seem a little expensive but for what it can do, I think it is a great addition to any creative business. Especially those that find themselves on the road or on location much of the time.
If you are a drone pilot and have experienced issues with batteries running out during projects, trips or holidays...this is for you. The peace of mind that having a portable power station to hand gives is invaluable. Heading out to a day long job knowing I have enough power wherever we may end up makes my job that much easier and more enjoyable.
