How far can you push the Panny GH4’s reach out of the box?
Post Updated January 2018: The features of this great little powerhouse of a mirrorless camera are far reaching indeed. One of the features that appeals to me is the kit lens' reach of 14mm to 140mm (10x optical). The Panasonic GH4 zoom range is phenomenal as you will see below.
When you mix this with:
...you have a small camera that is capable of a fantastic optical reach.
In this short video below, I first of all filmed a fence in our garden using a basic 1080p (1920 x 1080 pixels) setting. The lens was set to 14mm (28mm equivalent after taking into account the crop factor of the sensor).
I then shot another sequence of the fence with the lens set to 140mm (280mm equivalent). The teleconverter was set to on making the lens zoom further to 364mm (728mm equivalent). This time I shot using the 4K (3840 x 2160 pixels) resolution setting.
By shooting at 4K, I was then able to zoom in even further during post processing. This pretty much once again doubled the lens equivalent to around 1456mm! Outputting from 4K to 1080p meant I lost no resolution and the footage retained all its sharpness.
Not bad for a sub $2k camera…
We go from this image below to being able to see the smallest of spiders running along the top of that fence. Check out the video below at 1080p and full screen for best results (p.s. forgive the state of the garden, we are moving out very soon and the house is (we think) due to be demolished).
Remember, this is all done with just the camera and standard kit lens right out of the box…not bad!
Edit: In the video, I mean 28mbps not 28htz
