Render Humble Service/Follow Up/Support
“The greatest among ye shall be the servant of all”!
Never be afraid to do anything that is asked of you during a job or contract. Doing so will not make you weak, it will not make you a pushover and it will not mean you are not in control.
In fact, it will mean the complete opposite.
During shoots, and in particular, wedding shoots, I have taken on the task of MC (master of ceremonies), flower arranger, “people gatherer”, counselor, shoulder to cry on and many more roles. I am there anyway and if it helps the couple, and people/guests/suppliers see you helping, you will be rewarded in many more ways than a simple paycheque at the end of the day (or “check” if you are American ; )!
I have on a few occasions, received a special “thank you” during the wedding dinner and that makes one feel mighty humble as well as giving you full “professional” status in front of many possible future clients!
Never be afraid to get your hands dirty and get stuck into something that you are not being paid for. Learn about Karma, good Karma that is, and how it can affect you. This ties in with philosophies such as “what goes around comes around” and “you get back 10 fold what you put in”.
I am not religious in any way but I believe in people, the brain and the power of the mind.
I believe that the good you do will eventually find its way back to you in abundance…as will the bad. I try to maintain the “pay it forward” attitude in that if I do something good for someone, rather than them doing me a favour in return, I ask them to do something for someone else they may come across that needs help more.
One day, you will be the receiver of that goodwill in some way.
All sounds a bit heavy but if you think about it, would you rather do business with someone willing to help out, get stuck in, be a team player and not ask for something in return? Would you then want to do business with them again, and would you recommend them to friends?
Don’t let this attitude and manner diminish once the job is done. Continue with it through with your follow up business (reprints, albums etc) and support.
Recently, a client from two and a half years ago called me to ask for a large batch of reprints and enlargements (even thought they have the full resolution files) and I put this down to how I treated them during their wedding…they are happy to give me the business.
Not only that, but when those reprints were delivered, 3 of them were incorrect which was down to the clients error, not mine. I still reprinted the correct ones at no extra cost which went down a storm with huge gratitude and promises of recommending me to all their friends.
It’s the little things…
