Stock photography – Lifestyles apply to all of us whether rich, poor or somewhere in between…
As you can imagine, this is another big seller but it is also a category that has a lot of competition.
What do you think of when you hear “lifestyle”? Lifestyle of the rich and famous? That is a good place to start. Even though most of us are not rich or famous, most of us would like to be and that is what drives these images.
Buyers want to give the impression of grandeur and a lifestyle we all crave so they need top notch images. Happy, sunny, fun, expensive, shiny, exotic…
This shot was taken in Puerto Banus where all the rich people like to hang out in Spain…
Sold for $453 back in 2007.
If you intend to shoot images like this, make sure you clone out all points of reference such as registration numbers, names, logos etc. For some shots where I have hundreds of yachts in this has taken hours to do…quite laborious especially if you don’t know if they will sell or not.
I guess that is why many people fail at stock and say “it doesn’t work” or “there’s no money in it”. They hit a hurdle, don’t see immediate results and give up. Are you one of those people? Start slow if you have to and build slowly…there is no rush.
People work extremely well in lifestyle images so it may even be worth hiring a model or two…
Another Top Tip: Look at these two images…
I spent the whole day with the two girls on the left at the stunning Tarifa beach in Andalucia, Spain and got a whole portfolio of amazing shots. The guy on the right is a former model with his family looking to start modelling again after an agency approached him.
We agreed that I would do the shoot for nothing, give him all the high resolution files to do with as he pleases and I get to sell the images. Works out great for all concerned especially as when the images sell, it gives him great exposure and samples for his portfolio.
The girls were not models, they worked for a company I used to work for as a photographer and I made a special deal with this company after I left. I was still to do their lifestyle photography for them in exchange for model releases and full selling rights to the images as stock.
A great deal but part of it that we agreed was that I had to wait 6 months before putting them up for sale. This gave the company a chance to exploit and use them in all their marketing material for that year. Once they re-hashed all their brochures after 6 months with new images, I got to sell them from thereon in. Got you thinking?
Lifestyle really could be anything to do with how any of us, all over the world, live our lives but in general, go for inspiring images.
