Video 5D Mark II - Introduction

  • Just bought a Canon EOS 5D mark II?
  • Are you a digital photographer who thought you would never shoot video?
  • Changed your mind when you saw the mind blowing quality of the 5D Mark II footage?
  • Now you want to make the most of its capabilities?

I am a professional photographer that shoot mainly weddings and stock and had already fallen in love with the original Canon EOS 5D Mark I when it was first released. When I chose to upgrade to the EOS 5D Mark II, it was primarily for the larger sensor (for stock photography) and improved low light shooting (for weddings).

I was blown away on both counts as soon as I used the new 5D Mark II.

I had also been, for the past few years, getting in to videography as I learned how to shoot and render footage for tutorial DVDs and online clips as well as shooting stock footage. So when I saw the High Definition footage from the Canon EOS 5D Mark II for the first time, I was once again, blown away!

Canon have produced what many are calling a "game changing" DSLR and I agree.

About 2 years before the release of the Mark II, I had predicted that video would soon be integrated into DSLR's and that wedding photographers in particular should start to take notice. After all, once one photographer starts to include HD clips to their multimedia wedding slideshows, they all will!

So how do you make the most of the video feature?

I have been playing with the video feature since I bought the 5D Mark II and using it alongside the Sony PMW EX1 which is also HD (High Definition) but 3 times the price. To be honest, in some respects such as depth of field, low light shooting and simplicity/portability, the 5D Mark II wins hands down.

You see, to get the "film look" including that awesome shallow depth of field that you see in the movies, you either need a super pricey professional dedicated video camera or you need to use some form of adaptor like the Letus Extreme which will allow you to use 35mm lenses on a fixed lens video camera.

The 5D Mark II does it all in one package.

Video 5D Mark II - Philip Bloom

I have been following the work of Philip Bloom for a couple of years now. He is a super talented videographer with a long history of shooting quality footage for some big names and was recently invited to "Skywalker Ranch" in the States to show off his work with the 5D Mark II to the likes of Quentin Tarantino and George Lucas!

They loved it...

When you see Philips work and how he uses amazing depth of field, stylish editing and perfectly matched audio to tell his stories, you will see why he is in such demand.

So when the F-stop Academy, a specialist publisher of training for Digital film makers featuring Philip, released the DVD on how to make the most of the video features of the 5D Mark II, I had to get hold of a copy.

I had my 5D Mark II with me as I watched and paid particular attention when he showed how to set it up for optimum detail.

My camera is now set to go and the results are amazing..I always wondered how he got such amazing low light footage at night!
