American Thanksgiving Day is a time of family gatherings, to offer thanks, and to enjoy holiday meals. A time celebrated with turkeys, stuffing, and pumpkin pie. A time for holiday parades and giant balloons.
The Pilgrims, who celebrated the very first thanksgiving in the United States, were fleeing from religious persecution in their homeland, England. In 1609 one group of Pilgrims left the United Kingdom for the religious freedom that Holland offered, and there they lived and prospered.
However, after just a few years their young children were speaking Dutch and had integrated themselves to the Dutch way of life. This integration worried the Pilgrims as they considered the Dutch to be frivolous and that their ideas were a threat to their children's morality and education.
So, on Sept. 6 1620 the Pilgrims packed and set sail for the "New World" on board the Mayflower. They set sail from Plymouth in England and the long trip was cold, damp and took just over 2 months. Many of the passengers became sick and by the time land was sighted on November 10th, one person had died.
Cape Cod was the first land to be sighted, but they settled in Plymouth, which had been named by Captain John Smith 6 years earlier in 1614. Plymouth offered an excellent harbour with large brook that offered a great resource for fish. The Pilgrims largest concern was an attack by the Native American Indians, but it never came.
Thanksgiving is celebrated on the 4th Thursday of November,
