During a break in a shoot at Tarifa beach in southern Spain, I wanted to make the most of the crashing surf that was coming in. I noticed this young lady strolling out slowly through the surf and trying to suppress the shock of the cold Atlantic water. I set the shutter speed to 1000th/sec to freeze the water and framed the subject with just the sea to isolate her. It ended up being a relatively good stock shot, especially so as you cannot see her face meaning no model release was needed. If trying this sort of shot for stock photography, remember that if the person is recognisable and you can see their face, you need a model release. If you cannot recognise them but they have distinguishing marks such as tattoos or scars, it is a good idea to "Photoshop" these out before submitting them just to be on the safe side. Tarifa beach is a very exciting place to visit and the best times are just before or after the height of summer (June, July and August). The sea is beautifully clear and blue, the sand is white and clean and it is generally sunny. Tarifa beach is also well known for its "breeze" which attracts thousands of surfers and kitesurfers each year. ![]() |
