Nature Photography

When I first started with "digital" photography, I bought the Canon EOS 10D and a simple (but excellent) walk around lens, the EF 28-135 IS USM. This is a great combination for anyone getting started in photography with a limited budget.

I took the camera and lens to the bird sanctuary at Fuengirola zoo in southern Spain to test them out on sometimes fast moving, but brightly coloured and heavily detailed subjects.

The parrots were either incredibly naive of human presence or so used to it they just didn't care. I was able to get to within about 4 feet at times and just stood and fired away to my hearts content as they went through this strange "ritual".

The lens was at its longest focal length on 135mm and again, I just used the central focus point. I find this most useful as I know exactly what the camera will be concentrating on and not darting from point to point as I move about. In fact, I rarely use any other method these days, and the results are pretty sharp.

Many people talk about "L" glass from Canon being the only way to go, but at the prices, not everyone can afford them. This lens is, as I say, a great starter and will cover a fairly good focal range and is one of the best quality "walk around" lenses you can get for the money.
