Child Photography

This is one of my favourite child portraits. As I mentioned in image 10 , Jack and Sam had been running wild in which time I managed to get some great shots. However, at the end of this shoot, they had both worn themselves out completely and just flopped on the bed.
I took the opportunity to get some images that showed the other, calmer side of the pair. For the whole session I had used just one studio light with a softbox attached and it seemed to throw out enough light in the whole room that meant wherever the kids went, I had enough light to keep shooting without re-arranging anything.
For this shot I used a very large aperture of 1.4 on the Canon EF 50mm so that the image would concentrate on the eyes only. It is an extremely difficult aperture to work with, especially with portraits as the room for error in the depth of field is tiny. I took 6 or 7 shots to ensure that one at least was pin sharp on the eyes.
It worked very well and this shot (in black and white) now adorns the parent's living room wall in an A1 canvas print, the eyes just follow you around the room...
Exposure: 500th/sec F1.4
ISO: 100
