I got in really close for this shot as I wanted the image to show the intimate relationship between Mother and Child and nothing else.
Another reason for getting in close was the dark blue background that didn't quite "fit the bill", but I didn't want to lose the moment as kids this age can change their moods in an instant.
Knowing this, I had already set up the lighting in the room before we even attempted to get Dillon to sit still. When photographing people, children in particular, try to get everything set up before you start to shoot.
There is nothing worse than having to sit still and hang around while the photographer sorts his gear and set up out. The heat from the lights can also make people agitated so the less time they spend in its glare, the better.
