Visualise Your Business – Imagination/Desire/Dare to Dream!
The reason you are starting or thinking about starting a business is that there is something you probably want! That could be monetary riches, freedom from your current state, security for your family, material things, time!
When I decided to get married and have children, I changed.
I forgot about the crazy lifestyle I led and materialistic things I used to dream about and started thinking about my life more (although I still wanted nice things). I had started small businesses in the past but soon either my circumstances changes or I moved on to something else, it didn’t seem to matter too much back then.
For me, the reason I finally started seriously working for myself was time, time to spend with my new family when I hit my mid 30’s.
I had tried so many things in the past but never really knew why I was doing it. I knew I wanted to but didn’t have a good enough reason as to why. It was only when my desire had become so strong that I finally succeeded.
The real turning point came when the contract I had shooting properties in Spain ended due to the property crash out there.
It was coming up to Christmas, we were a few weeks from signing for a big mortgage in February, my wife wasn’t working as she was pregnant with our second child and things looked grim.
I remember being at the notary in Spain in February and the office was full. My wife and I, our lawyer, the notary and a couple of other officials were all present. The notary turned to me before handing over the paperwork and deeds and asked…
“So how is work going?”
I nearly fainted and just said, “Yes, very well thank you”, and we did the deal.
For the first week, I slept in a cold, empty house alone as we had no electricity or water yet but had started moving some of our things in and I was a “worrier” about security. When my wife and son moved in, I remember saying to her, “Right, give me one year to build a website and start a business and if that fails, we will move back to the UK and get jobs”!
My desire was burning out of control as I wasn’t ready to move back to the UK yet, I liked Spain.
I had a vision of where I wanted to be, what I wanted to do and how I was going to do it much like when I took over the manager’s job of my first sales position in Spain mentioned earlier. I spent 12-14 hours a day, 7 days a week for months building All Things Photography. I would get up at 5 or 6am with ideas rushing through my head and set to work not finishing until midnight, sometimes later.
After about 8 months, the website was being found by Google and putting me at number one for many search terms. I leveraged this and built a page entitled “Wedding Photographer on the Costa del Sol”.
After just a couple of weeks it ranked at number one (and was still there after 4 years if you Googled it…page has now gone as we are back in the UK) and the enquiries and work started to roll in. The following summer I was so busy at one point, I had to send the wife and kids back to England for a break to allow me to work in peace.
I had 12 weddings in 5 weeks in the thick of it and shot about 30 weddings in Spain and the UK that first year.
My focus and desire to get there is ultimately what made it happen.
I was reading everything I could about website optimisation (more on this later) and how to get found on the internet as well as learning new techniques for my photography and Photoshop. I knew what I wanted and kept upping the stakes as to where I wanted to be…I am still upping those stakes today.
You need to constantly visualise yourself already where you want to be. I would lay in bed at night and daydream about what I wanted, I would imagine having a successful website and shooting large weddings around Europe. I would visualise myself being at home with the kids in the Spanish sun and making my own time.
I would always think of new ideas and ways to get business coming in and test those ideas. The weight I had put on whilst building the website for the first year had all come off the following summer as I shot all those weddings (more on this later too).
Let your imagination run wild and dare to dream.
Try and visualise yourself as a successful fine artist selling prints to galleries or as a well paid travel or stock photographer earning a living by travelling the world doing what you love.
Imagine yourself working at home or your offices with your own staff around you.
Think positively and see yourself this way often enough and your subconscious mind will start to work on your behalf…sounds “heavy” but it’s true.
