Canon General Walkabout Lenses - Recommendations?

I have a Canon EOS Rebel K2, which I am happy with, but I want to start venturing into photographing with different lenses. I photograph children, pets and landscapes mostly, but I do photograph the occasional close up of plants, kids, etc.

I was looking at the EF 28-135 IS. I have read so many mixed reviews I don't know if I should buy it or not. I see that you list it as being used on some of your photographs, would you recommend this lens or should I go with a zoom telephoto lens.

I will be vacationing at the beach in two weeks which will give me a wonderful opportunity to take photographs. Do you have any lens recommendations?

When I first went over to digital, I bought the Canon EOS 10D and the 28-135mm to use with it. I didn't want to go crazy with "L" glass until I knew Canon was the way I wanted to go (I used to be Nikon).

It all depends on your budget and what you want to shoot. You can get excellent results from most Canon lenses these days, for example, one image I shot with the 6mp EOS 10D and 28-135mm made it onto a huge billboard advert.

The 28-135mm is good quality, it has Image Stabilisation and Macro thrown in for good measure. I think it is a good lens.

If money is no object...the 24-70 F2.8L is one of the best lenses I have ever used. It is sharp, versatile and rarely leaves my camera...even at weddings.

As a starter lens it is great.

Also look at the:

EF-S 17-85MM f4-5.6 IS

Might be better with a "crop factor" camera like the 20d, 30d, rebel, rebel XT etc.
