November 4, 2005 14:37 - Anything you can do.....

Soon after Canon released its new EOS 5D, Nikon have responded with the excellent D200.

It was only a matter of time before the Nikon camp upgraded its now somewhat dated D100, released more than 3 years ago, and it appears that they have excelled in many ways.

Up until now, Nikon were lagging behind a bit with new technology and new releases, but this model has given all the Nikon users something worth upgrading to that won't break the bank.

Canon, for example, have always tried to keep photographers of all standards happy in all price brackets, especially now with the choice of 10D (6MP), 20D (8MP), 5D (12MP), 1D MKII (8MP) and 1Ds MKII (17MP).

Nikon amateurs/enthusiasts/semi-pros with the D100, D50 or D70 were all stuck with a maximum of just 6MP sensors unless they wanted to shell out a lot of money for the more pro range of Nikons such as the D2x.

The D200 has now bridged that gap nicely with its 10.2MP sensor, lightweight, durable and robust magnesium alloy body with advanced sealing system and a continuous burst speed of 5 frames per second.

I would expect a huge flurry of sales the moment this is released…and I would also expect a lot of second hand D70´s 50´s and D100`s to hit the market very soon.

It is nice to see cameras starting to be released with real and noticeable (and worthwhile) upgrades rather than simply adding an "s" (Nikon D70s) or an "n" (Canon EOS 1D MKIIn) and just making a few minor adjustments.

Mmmm…"almost" makes me want to convert back to Nikon…..

November 11, 2005 14:50 - Lord Lichfield Dies - End of an era

As a budding and keen 13 year old photographer in the 1980´s, I had no internet, no Sky TV, no emails, in fact not much contact with the big wide world at all in comparison to today…just photography magazines.

It was inevitable then, that the most talked about photographers were simply the most famous. This was a time when people had very little "exposure" to their work other than locally.

Patrick Lichfield was one of those people that I aspired to. For one, he was a Lord! As a 13 year old boy I found it amazing that someone of such standing could have such an interest in and make a career out of photography.

It was then, with great sadness that I heard of his death today at just 66. It is the same kind of sadness that I felt when the great Freddie Mercury died in 1991 at just 45, another one of my childhood heroes.

I guess all photographers would love to leave behind the kind of legacy that he does. Having been a Royal photographer on many occasions, including the marriage of Prince Charles and Lady Diana in the 80´s, he has been in the public eye for many years.

It is nice to know that with the internet, we can leave just that little bit more behind when we leave, especially with photography.

This is a reminder to any professional photographers out there that wish to be included in our unique photographer directory.

Why is it unique? It is because we give you a full page devoted to you which is heavily keyworded for your own particular business and location and linked directly to your homepage. This means that you are found that more often by the main search engines for specific enquiries relating to your style and services of photography.

Although we have only had this running for a few months, most of our current members are receiving work; from weddings in Hawaii and Barbados, to portraits and weddings in the UK.

For example, the last page we built (which was just 10 days ago), is for a wedding and commercial photographer in Perthshire.

So, go to Google and type "wedding photographer Perthshire" and we are already (at the time of writing) on the front page, or top ten. If you type "wedding photographer in Perthshire", we are number three, and "commercial photographer perthshire" is number one.

All other listings are either ranked at 1 or 2 for their search terms, and at the very least on the first page of results. They also have a page rank of 3 or 4 with Google which we expect to rise as time progresses.

So unless you have too much business already, please get in touch and fill out the request form on the following page. All inclusions are free for the whole of 2006 and then will require a small fee (approximately €150 per annum) thereafter.

All jobs received next year are on us, and after that, just one job received through our site will more than pay for your listing or you can simply have your page removed! You have nothing to lose.
